Tips
This tool is for evaluating long braced excavations in clay against bottom heave, as shown in the figure above.
The surcharge uniform load is applied on the single side of the cut, and the magnitude can be "0" if there is no surcharge load.
The shearing resistance along ij may be considered as an increase in resistance.
The triangular part of soil with width of B′′ at the base of the excavation can be trated as a negatively loaded footing.
This type of problem can be trated as a perfectly smooth footing, and the bearing capacity factor N
c
should be 5.14.
